The hastily arranged meeting at the White House comes after Zelenskyy and European leaders scrambled over the weekend to find common ground with the US, after Trump dropped his demand for an immediate ceasefire following his meeting with Putin in Alaska on Friday.

Security guarantees: Zelenskyy found some encouragement in the US president’s apparent willingness to provide security guarantees for Ukraine after the war ends, to prevent another attack by Russia. The exact US position remains unclear, but Steve Witkoff, the US special envoy, told CNN yesterday that Putin had agreed in his meeting with Trump to allow the US and allies to give Ukraine a security guarantee similar to Nato’s collective defence mandate.
